As discussed in 11, by using the Mac OS X firewall, it is possible to limit access to various ports in OS X using the ipfw command. If you host a web site that should be accessible only to computers on the internal network, you need to configure your firewall to restrict access to the web server, allowing only local systems to access it. If necessary, you can add rules to allow access to computers outside of your network as well. For instance, if you have a web server that should only be accessible to your Accounting department, you could assign static IP addresses to those users (or reserve addresses for them on your DHCP server), and then restrict access to Apache s ports to only those addresses. NOTE: If you restrict access to your internal site based on IP addressing, make sure that as new IP schemes are added to your network environment, these changes are accounted for in later revisions of your ipfw tables.

One way to avoid unwanted traffic is to run Apache on a port other than port 80. If your web site is Internet facing, you can then redirect incoming traffic on port 80 to a different system on your network. This is not entirely foolproof, however, because some visitors who have outgoing traffic limited by their own firewalls may have trouble getting to your web site if it runs over a different port. Also, you may make it difficult for users to find the right port on which to access services, leading to possible frustration for legitimate users. The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and server-side includes are both methods for allowing apache to call other applications. CGI is typically used to process data entered in a form on a web site. Server-side includes are used for including dynamic information in documents sent to clients, such as the current date, the last modification date of the file, and the size or last modification of other files. As with other options within Apache, these should be enabled only if required. To disable them, use Includes or ExecCGI in your options line. These options can be used on a per-directory basis using Apache directives in the httpd.conf file. Web designers will often place CGI files in locations that are not secure or attempt to assign them rights that are insecure and give wrong permissions to users who access these files and scripts. Restricting the allowed locations of executable scripts allows administrators to keep all CGI scripts in a central location to ensure proper security for these scripts. This also limits the damage that can be done by scripts that may be uploaded to a web directory and executed by someone with improper permissions. Many administrators are already familiar with using a dedicated directory for running CGI scripts or includes. The industry standard is to use the CGI-BIN directory on web servers.
